Beauty is a love letter to confidence. When a woman finds the perfect shade of foundation—one that seamlessly melts into her skin and enhances her natural glow—it is an empowering moment. But for decades, the beauty industry struggled to formulate color cosmetics that truly honored the richness and depth of melanin.

This International Women’s Month, we are celebrating Balanda Atis, a pioneering Black cosmetic chemist who fundamentally changed the chemistry of inclusive glamour.

While working in the foundation laboratories at L'Oréal, Atis recognized a persistent, industry-wide issue: foundations formulated for darker skin tones often looked flat, ashy, or gray. Driven by a demand for quality and an uncompromising vision for beauty, Atis and her team took matters into their own hands. They traveled across the country, gathering comprehensive colorimetric data on the skin tones of women of color.

Through meticulous trial and error in the lab, Atis discovered a brilliant formulation breakthrough. By completely rethinking the way colorants interacted with deeper skin tones, she developed a revolutionary approach to foundation chemistry that absorbed the light causing those ashy undertones. The result? Rich, vibrant, and luxurious shades that perfectly matched deeper complexions. Her innovation directly led to the creation of iconic products, including Lancôme’s Teint Idole shade 555, famously formulated for Lupita Nyong’o.

Balanda Atis embodies the essence of smart luxury. She proved that when intelligent, fiercely capable women take command of the laboratory, the result is magnetic. Her scientific expertise ensured that women of color no longer had to settle for "almost right." Instead, they were given the tools to step into any room radiating poise and unapologetic power.

To the chemists, the innovators, and the women who demand excellence in every detail: we celebrate you. You are that girl.
